I’m so grateful for every moment I had here with him and have had since without him. To be here is to feel who he was as an artist and to witness us here is to feel who he was as a dad and friend. I miss him, but I have this house today. The old and new parts. The kids he knew and the one he never met. We are probably about as fragile as this stained glass but I’d like to think we are just as intact.

My house is originally a Sears home built in 1908. Sol preserved and repurposed everything he could when he remodeled all of our spaces. But when it comes to 100 year old windows, they are drafty, lead-based, brittle and fragile. So when we replaced all of our windows, keeping this one was intentional. The stained glass was a detail the original builder included and it’s completely intact. This window both separates and connects the porch to the rest of the house. I often sit in this chair and watch the kids dance or friends cooking.
